Hey folks.
1.) Once you have created your blog,
copy the html address and post it as a comment on this blog post. You should end up posting something like "html://weisman2012.blogspot.com." Please do that by 11:59pm, Friday night.
THEN.
2.) Go back to your blog and write a post getting into one of the statements from the
Mere Christianity survey we didn't have time to discuss in class. Alternately, you can spend some more time reflecting on one of the questions that DID come up in class, if you feel like you weren't able to fully discuss your ideas then. These are the requirements for your post:
- It needs to incorporate at least one quote from Mere Christianity.
- You should communicate a clear opinion on the issue and defend your point.
- You should use logic and outside examples to defend your point. (Either experiences from your own life, points you've heard other people make, or quotes from books, etc.)
- It should be 2-3 paragraphs long. (A paragraph should be at least 8 sentences if you're doing TS/ CD CM CM/ CD CM CM/ CS.)
Here are the main powerpoint questions; the ones we haven't gotten to yet are bolded. Pick
one to discuss in greater depth:
1. People all over the world share a universal understanding of what is right, and what is wrong.
2. People can choose to either “obey” the Moral Law (the law of right and wrong) or “disobey” it.
3. No one consistently obeys the Law of Nature. In other words, people invariably do things they “shouldn’t,” or do not do things they “should.”
4. The Moral Law is based off of social conventions; that is, we learn right and wrong based on what our parents teach us.
5. God gave humans free will.
6. God predestined his followers. In other words, before we were born, He had already chosen His children.
7. The Moral Law (our understanding about what is right vs. wrong) has developed out of human beings’ perception of what will be best for society as a whole.
8. The only way to recognize a controlling power outside of the universe is if it affects the emotions/thoughts of humans.
9. The more discoveries Science makes, the more Science becomes at odds with the teachings in the Bible.
10. Only a person can forgive.
11. If you look for comfort, you will not get it– you will only experience wishful thinking to begin with, and in the end, despair.
12. If you are a Christian, you should believe that other religions are completely wrong.
13. God is beyond good and evil. Our understanding of good and bad is dependent on our limited human’s point of view; therefore, we can’t critique the way God works as either good OR bad.
14. God is quite definitely “good” or “righteous.”
15. Certain things happen in this world that are against God’s will.
16. Everything that happens on this earth is from God, and is a part of His majestic plan.
17. Wickedness is usually a result of pursuing something good in the wrong way.
18. Free will, though it makes evil possible, is also the only thing that makes possible any love or goodness or joy worth having.
19. God designed the human machine to run on Himself.
20. Many people that don’t call themselves Christians are living successful, happy, contented lives.
21. If Jesus was not actually the Son of God, his claims that he was would prove him to be a lunatic.
22. A Christian can lose the “Christ-life” that has been put into him, which he has made efforts to keep.
23. Every moral failure is going to cause trouble, probably to others and most certainly to yourself.
24. We should “give until it hurts.” In other words, if the money we give to charity doesn’t force us to make personal sacrifices, it isn’t enough.
25. We should tithe or give to charity 10% of what we make.
26. Some people who have been raised with nice families, under good heredity, and pleasant circumstances, may in fact be worse than fiends-- if they haven’t made good use of their upbringing.
27. God judges people on what they have done with the raw materials they have been given.
28. Every time you make a choice, you are turning the central part of you (the part of you that chooses) into something a little different from what it was before.
29. The sexual appetite, like our other appetites, grows when we indulge it.
30. Pride is the worst of all sins.
31. No one can promise to continue feeling in a certain way.
32. There ought to be two kinds of marriage: one governed by the State with rules enforced on all citizens, the other governed by the Church with rules enforced on all Christians.
33. The real test of being in the presence of God is, that you either forget about yourself altogether or see yourself as a small, dirty object.
34. If you behave as if you loved someone, you will presently come to love him.
35. Sometimes it is good to pretend you’re something you’re not.
36. God works through nature, through our bodies, through books, and sometimes through experiences which seem, at the time, anti-Christian.
37. When Christians behave badly, or fail to behave well, they make Christianity unbelievable to the outside world.
38. The world does not consist of 100% Christians and 100% non-Christians.
39. We must get over wanting to be needed. For some people, this is the hardest temptation to resist.
40. In social situations, you will never make a good impression on other people until you stop thinking about what sort of impression you’re making.
41. It is important to know what you believe.
42. It is important to know why you believe in what you believe.
